Program note

Inspired by Walter de la Mare’s poem Moonlight, this work for soprano and four guitars seeks to evoke the beauty, intimacy and mystery of the text. The simple vocal line is set off by an instrumental introduction, interlude and conclusion. The work was composed for the Philadelphia Guitar Ensemble and premiered by them with soprano Janice Kestler in 1985. The work is published by Theodore Presser Co.
